A Silent Voice is complete in English, and Kodansha sells it three ways: seven paperbacks, a box set of those seven, or two large Collector’s Edition hardcovers. The story is the same in each. The box costs the same as the seven paperbacks at list, so its extras come at no list premium. The Collector’s Edition costs more and adds over fifty pages of material per book, but its halves divide the story in the middle of Vol. 4.

The three routes

The paperbacks and the box

Kodansha’s series page marks A Silent Voice “Complete” and lists seven volumes at $10.99 each in print. The box set page says it “Includes all seven volumes, plus an exclusive, double-sided 10-by-15-inch poster and a replica of Shoko’s communication notebook,” at $76.93, exactly seven times the single price. If you are buying all seven new at list, the box is the better deal by its extras. If you own any of the paperbacks, the box repeats them; buy the missing numbers instead.

The Complete Collector’s Edition

Kodansha describes two “extra-large, deluxe” hardcovers, each with “more than fifty pages of new content.” The Book 1 page lists “color art and concept sketch galleries, early drafts of the story, and interviews with creator Yoshitoki Oima and others.” None of that continues the story; it is material around it.

The split matters if you mix editions. Kodansha’s 2020 announcement said Book 1 runs “from Vol. 1 through half of Vol. 4,” and the Book 2 page says it extends “from the second half of Vol. 4 through the end of the series.” (That page’s sentence opens with “the first half of the story,” a slip the rest of the sentence corrects.) So someone who owns paperbacks 1 to 3 and buys Collector’s Book 2 misses the first half of Vol. 4. Buy paperback Vol. 4 as well if you switch at that point.

Which to buy

  • Trying it: paperback Vol. 1.
  • Buying the whole story at once: the box set, which costs the same as the seven paperbacks at list.
  • Want the drafts and art galleries: the Collector’s Edition, and do not mix it with paperbacks without checking the Vol. 4 split.
  • Reading digitally: the paperbacks; the box and the Collector’s Edition are print only.

The A Silent Voice catalog has every ISBN. For other short complete runs, the completed manga guide lists the Collector’s Edition among its two-book routes. After you finish, A Silent Voice ending explained compares the manga’s last volume with the film (spoilers), and Shoko Nishimiya looks at the lead.
