About

A quote without context is a fridge magnet. This site exists because the good lines deserve the paragraph that explains why they are good.

Who is Deku?

Deku is an original character, and the name is an ordinary Japanese word: 木偶, a limbless wooden puppet — and, as slang, a person who is no use to anybody. He was carved, set aside, called useless, and has spent the intervening centuries reading. He curates the lines that stayed with him. The word has a longer story, and it is worth reading before you decide whether it is an insult.

How the commentary works

Every quote on this site is quoted briefly and commented on at length — the commentary is always longer than the line it discusses. That is partly a legal posture and mostly an editorial one. Reproducing someone else’s writing is not a contribution; saying something true about it might be. If a page here is ever just a list of quotes, it has failed.

What this site does not do

No official artwork, screenshots, episode clips, manga panels, or studio logos appear anywhere on this site, ever. Every image is original — the mascot, the quote cards, all of it. Series and character names are used only to identify the works being discussed, which is what commentary requires and what trademark law permits.

Spoilers

Quotes drawn from endings are marked and collapsed by default. You have to choose to open them. Nobody should have a decade-long series ruined by a quote page.
