Bleach's Ending, Explained: Yhwach, the Epilogue and Hell
The manga ended in August 2016 with Yhwach gone and an epilogue years later; a 2021 one-shot reopened it with Hell. Where Thousand-Year Blood War's final episodes stand.
Spoilers throughout. This page assumes you have finished the series.
Bleach's manga ended in August 2016 with Yhwach, the Quincy king, gone and an epilogue set years later in which the next generation has already arrived. Tite Kubo then reopened the door in 2021 with a one-shot, reported in English as No Breaths From Hell, that ends on a cliffhanger. The anime, meanwhile, is still finishing the last arc: the final two episodes of Thousand-Year Blood War are scheduled for late October 2026 (checked October 7, 2026).
When and where the manga ended
Anime News Network reported that the final chapter would be published on August 22, 2016 in Weekly Shonen Jump, and that the 74th volume would be the last. VIZ's official chapter list ends at chapter 686. In English the ending is collected in VIZ's Bleach, Vol. 74, released October 2, 2018, which the publisher describes as the final battle against Yhwach in the Quincy King's throne room and "the emotional conclusion of Bleach." In Anime News Network's chapter-title listing, the last chapter shares its title, "Death & Strawberry," with the very first chapter.
The final battle, cut short
The manga's last fight is brief, and that is part of its reputation. ComicBook.com has reported that the final battle between Ichigo and Yhwach was cut short in the original run, with Shueisha seemingly urging Kubo to end the series as quickly as possible, and that the epilogue ran for two chapters at the expense of that fight. One reading is that the manga chose the future over the fight. A reader who found the printed finale abrupt has a fair complaint, and it is one the anime has set out to answer, as the last section shows.
The epilogue
The epilogue jumps years forward and introduces the next generation. Ichigo and Orihime are married with a son, Kazui, whom ComicBook.com notes was first revealed in the manga's final chapter. Rukia and Renji are married too, with a daughter, Ichika; ComicBook.com names her Ichika Abarai. The Mary Sue's summary of the ending describes the same two marriages and children.
That is the part worth arguing about. Our reading is that Kubo ends the war story on people who never fought in it, which makes the ending less about Ichigo's victory than about the life the victory was for. The objection is equally fair: an epilogue built on marriages and children can read as a checklist rather than a conclusion.
The repeated title points the same way. Ending on the first chapter's name frames the series as a circle, closed where it opened. That framing is ours, inferred from the titles; Kubo has not been quoted here explaining it.
No Breaths From Hell (2021)
The ending did not stay closed. Anime News Network reported that Weekly Shonen Jump would run a new 73-page Bleach chapter on August 10, 2021, for the manga's 20th anniversary, teased with the line "Ichigo was invited to Soul Society for a certain ceremony but!?" According to ComicBook's account of the one-shot, it is set a few years after the final chapter, reveals that figures too powerful to be reincarnated are sent to a hellish realm instead, and brings back Szayelaporro Granz, stronger than he was in life. ComicBook describes it as ending on a cliffhanger.
So the epilogue is not quite the last word. One reading is that the one-shot quietly revises the ending's promise of peace: the most powerful of the dead have not gone anywhere. ComicBook.com has reported unconfirmed rumors that Kubo will continue the Hell story as a serialization; as of October 7, 2026, we have not found an official announcement of one.
Where the anime stands
The original television anime ran 366 episodes from 2004 to 2012 and stopped before the final arc, as Anime News Network's background notes. The Thousand-Year Blood War adaptation is running as four cours with breaks in between; per Anime News Network, the third part concluded in a one-hour final episode in December 2024, and the fourth and final part, The Calamity, premiered on July 25, 2026 on TV Tokyo.
The same report says episodes 49 and 50 were delayed to Monday, October 19 and Monday, October 26 at 24:00 in Japan, with the committee explaining that staff were improving quality ahead of the climax. Anime News Network describes the anime as covering the rest of the original manga up through its ending, but it is not a page-for-page copy. ComicBook.com reported that episode 45 gave Ichigo a new Bankai form created by Kubo and never seen in the manga, and ended with Orihime apparently killed, which does not happen in the manga. The epilogue's children are on their way: ComicBook.com reported that Azusa Tachibana will voice Kazui and Ayaka Ohashi will voice Ichika in the final two episodes. How closely those episodes follow the manga's epilogue cannot be confirmed until they air, so a reader who wants the ending as drawn has volume 74. For which parts to watch and what to skip, see the Bleach watch order and filler list; Bleach quotes, after the ending rereads six lines with this finale in hand, and Ichigo's quote page covers the character the ending is built around.
