Cowboy Bebop: Sub or Dub?

This is the series people point at when they argue that dubs can be the better version, and the argument is a good one. Cowboy Bebop is the rare case where the English track is a reasonable default rather than a compromise.

The short answer

Watch the dub. That is not the advice this site gives often, and it is not advice to skip the Japanese track, which is excellent. It is a recognition that the English cast got something specific right that suits this show more than it would suit almost any other.

Why the dub works here

Bebop is a jazz-noir pastiche with an American vocabulary. It is built out of westerns, film noir and pulp fiction, and most of its episodes are named after songs or musical genres. A hard-boiled register in English is not a translation of the material, it is the material's native idiom, so the dub gets to play the genre straight where a dub of a school comedy is always working against the room.

Steve Blum's Spike is the performance that carries the reputation, and the English dub is regarded as one of the best anime dubs. The read is deliberately underpowered: bored, dry, a half-beat slower than the scene, which is exactly the joke of a man who fights beautifully and cannot be persuaded to care about anything.

What the sub still holds

The Japanese track is not a lesser telling and the show was written for it. Two things in particular survive better there: the quieter Faye material, where the English performance leans harder on brass than the writing asks for, and the flashback register, where the series drops the pastiche entirely and stops being funny. If the dub has a failure mode it is that its confidence flattens the moments the show wants uncertain.

The one thing to know before choosing

The scripts diverge in wording more than they diverge in meaning, and lines circulate online in both. If a line reads differently on our Cowboy Bebop pages than you remember it, you are probably remembering the other script.
