Did Frieren really ask why she did not get to know him better?
Yes, in VIZ’s English manga chapter 1. Frieren asks why she did not make more effort to know Himmel during their journey together. The checked wording belongs to the manga’s funeral scene; it does not establish the exact phrasing of an anime dub or subtitle release.

True for the licensed English manga. VIZ’s chapter 1 gives Frieren the question “WHY DIDN’T I TRY TO GET TO KNOW HIM BETTER?” during Himmel’s funeral. The wording here follows the manga’s capitalized lettering. VIZ’s chapter reader is the source for this attribution.
The surrounding panels matter. Frieren says she knew little about Himmel despite traveling together for ten years, and she acknowledges that human lives are short. Her question follows those admissions as she cries. It is regret about a missed relationship, rather than a request for somebody to supply a biographical fact.
What the question changes
One reading is that knowing somebody requires deliberate attention. Being nearby can create an opportunity for friendship without ensuring that the opportunity is used. The question turns her attention toward what she failed to ask, notice, or understand. It makes ignorance a consequence of a choice, even if that choice was made casually rather than cruelly.
The word “try” gives the regret its particular shape. A person cannot guarantee complete knowledge of someone else. They can decide whether to make the effort. Read that way, the line asks for a change in practice: show curiosity while an answer is still possible, rather than assuming there will always be another occasion.
A serious counter-reading is that this is grief speaking. A grieving person can underestimate the connection they did have and judge their earlier self unfairly. Her question does not prove that the whole friendship was empty, or that every unasked question represents a moral failure. It expresses her present sense of loss. Keeping that distinction leaves room for both affection and regret.
How to cite the line
Describe it as Frieren’s question in VIZ’s English manga chapter 1, in the funeral scene. That identifies the version and the setting without promising that another translation uses the same sentence. A manga balloon can settle the text printed in that edition; an anime quotation requires evidence from the relevant anime release.
Avoid expanding the quotation into an invented speech about appreciating people before they die. That may be a reasonable lesson a reader takes from the scene, but it is commentary. The actual question is narrower and more personal. Preserving that boundary also preserves what makes it useful: she is confronting a specific missed chance rather than announcing a universal rule.
The attribution passes with this manga scope. For the distinction between a verified line and a broader lesson attached to it, see how we verify quotations.
