Did Pain Really Say “Those Who Do Not Understand True Pain Can Never Understand True Peace”?

Unverified as worded. ComicBook prints a related line, "Those who do not know pain will never understand true peace," just before Pain destroys much of Konoha. No trusted source we could read prints the popular version.

Unverified as worded. A close relative of the line is printed by ComicBook: "Those who do not know pain will never understand true peace." The popular version, "Those who do not understand true pain can never understand true peace," appears in no trusted source we could read, and Wikiquote's Shippuden transcription contains neither.

The version a newsroom prints

ComicBook's article on Pain's most famous quote, by Adam Gonzales, published May 21, 2025, prints the line in its body text as part of a three-sentence speech: "Those who do not know pain will never understand true peace. I will never forget the pain Yahiko suffered. And now, this world shall know pain." It places the speech "in the final moments before fully destroying a large portion of the village" of Konoha. ComicBook does not give an episode or chapter and does not say whether its wording follows the dub, a subtitle track or VIZ's manga.

Compared with the popular version, it says "know pain" rather than "understand true pain" and "will never" rather than "can never". The second half, "understand true peace," is the same. Two short sentences differing in three places is a normal result of separate translations, but no source we could read identifies where the popular one comes from.

What the transcription has

Wikiquote's Naruto Shippuden page lists "This world shall know pain." among the series' recurring lines, which matches the end of ComicBook's speech. Its only Pain line with "true peace" in it is filed under "Tale of Naruto Uzumaki," where he tells Naruto there will never be such a thing as true peace in this accursed world. CBR's list of Nagato's quotes has a different "true pain" line, about children growing up as they learn what true pain is, and only as a heading.

A related unresolved attribution

This is a different case from "Sometimes you must hurt in order to know", which also remains unverified. Here a trusted newsroom prints a sentence with the same idea, in a scene. What is missing is a source for the exact English that circulates. The site's verdict for that gap is Unverified, not fabricated.

How we checked

We re-read Wikiquote's raw page text, ComicBook's article and CBR's list on October 14, 2026. Pain's sourced lines are on Nagato's page, and the Naruto sub vs dub guide explains why a rendering needs a named source. The verdict is logged in the fact-check database, and the verification method explains the standard. A VIZ page or a licensed episode track would settle both wordings.
