Edward and Maomao: Using Expertise
Edward's mistaken assumption about automail and Maomao's hidden literacy test different limits on expertise. Knowing something is not the same as knowing the setting or controlling how the knowledge will be used.

Expertise does not travel without friction. A technique can be sound while an assumption about the situation is wrong. A useful ability can also become dangerous when somebody else controls the terms on which it is used. Edward and Maomao's selected scenes examine these different limits.
For Edward, the example is Ice Queen, episode 34 of Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. Wikiquote's English transcription records a doctor explaining the materials needed for automail in the cold. Edward admits that his attempt to decompose the automail failed because he assumed it was largely iron. This supplies the encounter's reasoning; it does not certify the words of a particular English audio track.
For Maomao, the Square Enix preview of The Apothecary Diaries volume 1 gives the institutional problem a concrete form. She privately reasons that showing she can read would mean more work and higher wages benefiting her abductors. Later, on printed page 38, another character observes that she has been taken for illiterate, while her internal response favors maintaining the appearance of ignorance.
A correct method can start from a false premise
Edward's mistake is valuable because it does not require him to become less capable. It asks him to revise what he thinks he is working on. A strong technique applied to the wrong material is not made better by greater confidence or more force.
The doctor's explanation introduces a different kind of authority: knowledge of the demands imposed by the setting. Expertise has to admit that another person may know the object, conditions, and needs more precisely. The willingness to revise an assumption can therefore be part of competence rather than an embarrassment that competence should prevent.
Being useful can reduce a person's freedom
Maomao's calculation changes the question. She is not simply unsure whether her ability will work. She anticipates what other people will do once they know it exists. Recognition, usually presented as a reward for talent, can increase demands while leaving the talented person little control over the benefit.
The difference is between improving an account of the world and making oneself more available to it. Edward needs to let new information change his approach. Maomao has reason to control which information about herself becomes available. These responses can both be intelligent without becoming universal rules.
Read together, the scenes make expertise relational. Other people hold knowledge that a specialist needs; other people may also hold power over the specialist. An account that praises openness in every setting would miss the second problem. An account that praises concealment in every setting would miss the first.
The strongest counterreading
A defense of visible expertise would ask what knowledge could accomplish if it remained hidden. Concealment may protect its possessor while leaving a solvable problem unanswered. A defense of Edward's confidence would likewise note that making an initial assumption is often necessary before new information is available.
Both objections are serious. The scenes do not prove that secrecy is always justified or that mistaken assumptions are always blameworthy. They show why the next decision matters: can the specialist revise the premise, and can the person being asked to contribute exercise meaningful control over that contribution?
Expertise deserves respect when it answers both questions. Accuracy requires an openness to correction. Agency requires attention to who owns the work and receives its benefits. Knowing more should not mean pretending to know everything, or consenting to every use another person finds for you.
