Gojo and All Might: Mentorship
Gojo and All Might open doors for students, but their early lessons make different demands. Their mentorship raises the question of what a teacher owes before exposing a student to danger.

A powerful teacher can make an opportunity possible without making that opportunity safe. Gojo and All Might's early mentorship puts pressure on the distance between those achievements. The useful comparison is not who has the more inspiring personality. It is what their decisions require of a student who depends on them for access to a new life.
In James Beckett's Anime News Network review of Jujutsu Kaisen's opening episodes, Gojo tests Yuji, whose immediate execution is subsequently postponed. In the third episode, he takes Yuji and Nobara to a curse infestation to assess how Nobara handles the stronger and more cunning city curses. The opportunity therefore comes with exposure to the work's danger.
In Sam Leach's review of My Hero Academia episode 3, All Might chooses Midoriya as the recipient of his transferable power after seeing his courage. He then organizes a training regimen around clearing garbage from a beach, preparing Midoriya's body for the power. The labor has a public benefit as well as a personal purpose.
Recognition starts an obligation
Both encounters can be read as recognition becoming material help. A teacher's approval matters because it changes what the student can actually do. Praise without access would leave the underlying exclusion intact. Offering a route into training makes the assessment consequential.
Yet choosing a student also creates an obligation for the chooser. The mentor knows more about the demands ahead and exercises more control over how the student meets them. Recognition cannot function as a waiver that makes every subsequent risk acceptable. The student has been judged promising, not invulnerable.
A test and a preparation are different promises
Gojo's field assignment tests an ability under changing conditions. On this evidence, his method treats uncertainty as part of what needs to be learned. A controlled display of competence would not necessarily show whether the student can adapt to an unfamiliar threat. That is a serious educational rationale for a difficult assignment.
All Might's beach regimen instead treats the student's present limits as a reason to build capacity before delivering what he has promised. The valuable feature is the separation of courage from readiness. An admirable impulse warrants support; it does not, by itself, create the physical ability to carry the opportunity safely.
These are differences between the selected scenes, not a claim that one teacher always prepares and the other never does. The comparison asks what the invitation means: are you being given time to grow into a responsibility, or being placed inside the responsibility to find out whether you can grow?
The strongest counterreading
It would be too easy to praise preparation and condemn fieldwork. Some judgment can be learned only by facing the conditions in which it will be used. Training that postpones every encounter with uncertainty may produce confidence without adaptability. Conversely, even an apparently constructive regimen can make a student dependent on a single powerful person's approval.
The relevant standard is therefore not the absence of risk. It is whether the mentor understands the student's limits, supplies support, and leaves room to question the terms of the opportunity. Neither courage nor talent should turn into an obligation to accept whatever a teacher decides.
Read together, these early scenes make mentorship a distribution of responsibility. The student must do the work. The teacher must answer for the conditions under which that work becomes possible.
