Jet Black: When Care Becomes Control
Jet's reunion with Elisa exposes a form of care that leaves no room for another person's decisions. His practical competence is valuable, but it cannot answer her demand for autonomy.

Jet's reunion with Elisa asks whether being dependable can become a way of making yourself indispensable. The danger is not care itself. It is the assumption that knowing how to solve another person's problems gives you the right to decide which problems they may choose.
In Kyle Anderson's Nerdist account of episode 10, Ganymede Elegy, Jet encounters his former partner Elisa. During the confrontation over her boyfriend Rhint, she says she left because Jet's protection prevented her from being her own person. Jet ultimately walks away and throws his old watch into the water. This particular reunion, rather than an assumption that every act of leadership is controlling, anchors the reading.
Competence does not confer ownership
Elisa's objection separates a solution from a relationship. A person can be accurate about risk and still deny someone else a meaningful part in deciding how to live. Practical correctness is therefore an incomplete defense. It can establish that a course of action is sensible without establishing that the person recommending it should have final authority.
Her criticism also changes what protection means. Protection can increase someone's ability to choose by removing a threat. It can also narrow that ability if the protector treats dependence as the desirable outcome. The same outward commitment to safety can support very different relationships.
Jet's challenge is to hear the objection without reducing it to another problem he can solve for her. If autonomy is what she says was missing, a more efficient form of supervision will not provide it. The appropriate response would require a limit on his own role, including an acceptance that her decisions need not vindicate his judgment.
A boundary is not the same as surrender
Anderson describes Rhint's killing of a loan shark as self-defense, then recounts Jet insisting that Elisa cannot escape the situation without risking becoming an accomplice. The collision is difficult precisely because Elisa's complaint does not erase the immediate consequences. Respecting a person's agency does not require pretending that every choice is harmless.
That leaves two questions that should be kept separate. Does Jet have grounds to intervene in the danger before him? Does that intervention prove that his old approach to their relationship was right? The first may be defensible while the second is not. A crisis can justify a particular action without retrospectively authorizing years of control.
The discarded watch can be read as a limit placed on Jet's claim to the past. It cannot tell us that he has permanently changed. It does offer a concrete ending to this encounter: an object that preserved his attachment is relinquished, rather than used to demand that Elisa return to the relationship it represents.
The strongest counterreading
A defense of Jet would stress that care often involves unglamorous obligations. Someone has to notice dangers, make difficult judgments, and act when reassurance is insufficient. Treating all firmness as coercion would make responsible care almost impossible. Elisa's dissatisfaction cannot by itself decide every question about the present confrontation.
That defense is strongest when it accepts her criticism instead of dismissing it. Jet can retain duties without claiming possession. The ethical distinction is between enforcing a boundary around an immediate harm and deciding that another adult must organize her life around his protection.
His reunion matters because those two responsibilities are easy to confuse. Dependability deserves trust when it makes room for another person's agency. It becomes control when the protected person's freedom is treated as an inconvenience to the protector's good intentions.
