21st Century Boys Volume 1 continues the original paperback story after 20th Century Boys. The changed title does not introduce a new cast or an independent starting point: Kenji still has to investigate the Friend's identity after the larger confrontation. Buy this for the continuation of that unresolved mystery, then continue to the second standard paperback. The Perfect Edition also uses Volume 1 in its title, so check which edition you are completing before ordering.

The Friend's death does not give Kenji the explanation he needs. VIZ locates the remaining clue in his memories, making recollection necessary after the immediate threat of extinction has passed. That premise changes the task facing the survivor. Defeating an enemy and understanding how that enemy emerged are separate achievements; the latter cannot be supplied by the fact of survival. The new title therefore marks unfinished investigative work rather than a fresh adventure. For readers who wanted the confrontation to settle the identity question by itself, this paperback is the additional reading that expectation omitted.
