Shoya has a chance to approach Shoko again after the school bullying that drove them apart. The paperback continuation shifts the buying question from witnessing the original harm to following an attempt at repair. His former friends have rejected him, but that does not tell Shoko what she owes him now. Read the opening volume first: this reunion depends on the difference between feeling sorry for someone and accepting that person's apology.

Spoilers — why this volume matters. Tap to reveal.

The change from school cruelty to an attempted apology gives Shoya a new problem: wanting forgiveness is an intention, while receiving it depends on someone else. Kodansha's setup puts his social rejection beside his desire to show Shoko he has changed. Those facts explain his urgency without granting him a claim on her attention. That is the useful tension in this stage of the run. If his loneliness becomes the whole argument for reconciliation, Shoko risks being assigned another job on his behalf. The reunion matters because communication has to make room for a response he cannot choose.
