Shoya's effort to make amends continues in a paperback that sits across the Collector's Edition split. Kodansha places the first half of standard Volume 4 in Collector's Edition 1 and the second half in Collector's Edition 2. Readers switching from the first hardcover should therefore start with this paperback, accepting some overlap, rather than skip to Volume 5. Readers staying with the singles can simply continue after Volume 3; the binding boundary is not a new beginning for Shoya and Shoko.

The amusement-park trip gives Shoya a concrete way to try to make Shoko happy after a romantic disappointment. It also reunites familiar people from their past, so the proposed remedy contains some of the history it is meant to overcome. A pleasant outing is an inadequate measure of whether a debt has been repaid; happiness cannot serve as a receipt. That is a useful reservation about Shoya's plan, rather than a prediction of the trip's outcome. The edition split adds a separate practical problem: this whole paperback cannot be replaced by either Collector's Edition volume alone. Moving between formats requires overlap or both hardcovers.
