The College opens a new setting for The Ancient Magus’ Bride in its tenth book. Chise receives an invitation to a society of alchemists beneath the British Library after peace returns to the cottage. This is a useful marker for continuing the run into its school setting, although the relationships arrive with their history intact. Treat the change of address as a new set of pressures on established characters, rather than permission to discard the earlier books.

Cartaphilus entering a long sleep creates room for the College invitation, so the new setting follows a respite rather than erasing what came before. A school offers a different test from a household: learning now happens inside a society whose assumptions about human students may not fit everyone attending it. The important change is who gets to define normal progress. Elias and Chise cannot settle that entirely between themselves once an institution becomes part of the arrangement. The College therefore earns attention as a setting with rules of its own, not merely a larger classroom for the same private apprenticeship.
