The College’s attacks become an investigation in The Ancient Magus’ Bride’s fourteenth book. Lucy has been attacked on the camping trip and professor Simeon on campus. Those locations matter for a reader: returning to school has not restored an obvious safe boundary. Continue here for the developing problem of what links the victims, with the earlier trip supplying the necessary context rather than a separate adventure to leave behind.

The stolen Testament of Carnamagos gives the attacks a possible connection, but a suspected link is not yet a complete explanation. Elias having looked through the tome also prevents the forbidden object from belonging solely to some distant, unknown enemy. Chise and Lucy face werewolves while the staff tries to connect theft and violence. The useful distinction is between having a dangerous object to name and understanding who is using it. Naming the book can organize an investigation; it cannot by itself make either the campus or the people associated with it safe.
