The attempt to reach Philomela continues in The Ancient Magus’ Bride’s eighteenth book. Chise and her companions are pursuing a rescue already entangled with the Testament. This belongs with the surrounding confrontation, rather than serving as a detached adventure or a convenient introduction to the College cast. Read the preceding volume first: the rescue grows out of a crisis involving both Philomela and the forbidden book, not a newly assigned mission.

Chise becomes a dragon and travels through the earth’s ley lines to reach the Sargant house, yet that extraordinary means of arrival does not solve the rescue. Philomela is so corrupted by the Testament that she cannot hear the group, requiring Chise to enter her inner world. The contrast puts a limit on the usefulness of spectacular power: crossing physical distance is easier to define than making contact with a person whose ability to receive help has been compromised. The scene’s premise makes reaching the house an intermediate achievement. Access to the person is the harder problem.
