Chise begins making her own wand at the Dragon Aerie in The Ancient Magus’ Bride’s fourth book. The practical task gives this installment a more specific appeal than another encounter with magical danger: an apprentice needs a means of working. It belongs with the preceding books, since the interest in acquiring that tool depends on the difficult powers Chise is learning to handle. Buy for the apprenticeship, rather than as a fresh introduction.

Making a wand gives Chise’s education a concrete object, but the trip also brings information about Elias and the history he has withheld. Those are different kinds of equipment. A tool can help an apprentice act; knowledge about the teacher can help her judge the conditions under which she is being taught. The revealing comparison is between what Chise is being asked to learn and what Elias has been reluctant to disclose. Treating the wand as the only important acquisition would miss the value of reducing that imbalance in knowledge.
