Berserk Volume 5 continues the Hawks' earlier campaigns, with Guts fighting in Griffith's company. The publisher places Nosferatu Zodd in the path of those campaigns, giving the mercenary history a threat beyond rival soldiers. Read this after the preceding account of Guts joining the Hawks. Deluxe 2 collects standard Volumes 4 through 6; its numeral is not the paperback volume number, and this book occupies the middle of that collection.

Zodd changes the terms under which the Hawks' abilities can be judged. The publisher calls Guts their fiercest champion, then describes him and Griffith as insufficient against this particular opponent. Their military reputation consequently supplies the comparison that makes Zodd significant. PRH also singles out the object around Griffith's neck, without making superior swordsmanship the answer. The interest is in the limit placed on the pair's competence: they can be exceptional within their profession and still encounter a power for which that profession has no adequate preparation.
