Blue Lock Japan starts its youth World Cup campaign against Nigeria. The opening match puts the team's special training into competition and moves the buying question from preparation to tournament participation. This is the start of that campaign, although the players' individual ambitions come from the preceding run. Read it after the training interval if you want those ambitions attached to the people carrying them onto the international field.

The new national label does not erase the players' competition with one another. Kodansha describes an attacking contest against Nigeria in which Blue Lock's players also try to distinguish themselves. The tournament therefore tests more than their ability to beat a foreign opponent: it asks whether the system's internal rivalry remains productive when the side represents Japan. That is the specific appeal of beginning this stage. The training has an external occasion on which to justify itself, but the team's members still want individual prominence. Representing the same country does not give them an identical definition of a successful match.
