Clear Card volume 1 begins Sakura's middle-school sequel, for readers returning to a heroine with an established magical life. Syaoran is back from Hong Kong, but Sakura's cards have lost their power after a strange dream. That combination is the reason to start here: the reunion offers continuity while the failed cards give the new story a problem of its own. Buy this for the start of Clear Card, with the earlier Cardcaptor Sakura story behind it.

The opening makes a useful distinction between having experience and having working tools. Sakura enters middle school with a history as a cardcaptor, then discovers that the cards she already possesses cannot do their job. Her next adventure therefore has a stronger premise than simply finding more objects to collect. Familiarity does not solve the immediate problem. Syaoran's return also matters to that reading: a welcome reunion and a magical failure occupy the same starting situation. This is the book to choose when the appeal is seeing an established life disrupted, rather than meeting Sakura before she ever had one.
