Dandadan begins with a disagreement between Momo and Okarun about which impossible things deserve belief. She accepts spirits and dismisses aliens; he takes the opposite position. Their attempt to settle the argument sends each toward the phenomenon they reject. Start here for the relationship behind the paranormal encounters: the pair have to deal with being wrong in front of someone they wanted to correct.

The opening wager makes skepticism unusually selective. Momo and Okarun each already accept something extraordinary, so neither can claim the comfortable role of the sensible observer rescuing a gullible friend. Sending Momo to a UFO hotspot and Okarun to a haunted tunnel gives their disagreement a practical cost. That is a stronger foundation for the partnership than simply assigning them matching interests. Each has a reason to need the other's knowledge while retaining a reason to be embarrassed about needing it. The first book sells the friction between their certainties as much as the creatures that upset them.
