Jiji's home becomes the site of a sacrifice in Dandadan's continuing hot springs investigation. The Kito clan has put the group in an alternate version of the house as an offering to the serpent god. This follows the town's hostility directly, so begin with the preceding book if you want the investigation before its trap. The house is already dangerous before the group can decide how to confront what waits inside.

The Evil Eye complicates the category of victim. The child encountered in the house is another sacrifice, yet possession turns Jiji into a threat to the friends who came to help him. Okarun holding that threat off while Momo goes for help separates two jobs that a simple rescue would combine: protecting Jiji and protecting people from him. The child's history does not make the immediate danger harmless. That tension gives the Evil Eye's arrival more importance than another opponent entering the fight. The group must respond to someone harmed by the same arrangement that now endangers them.
