- Season 3: Swordsmith Village Arc ep. 45–55
The Swordsmith Village fight starts here, and with it a character the last volumes depend on. Chapters 107 to 115 open with two Upper Rank demons inside the village and Tanjiro, Nezuko and the Mist Hashira in their way. Genya Shinazugawa, first met at the Final Selection, is the Wind Hashira's younger brother and turns out to be a fighter unlike anyone else in the Corps, and how he fights is the volume's surprise. Season 3 covers this book in its middle episodes: episode 48 is titled 'Thank You, Tokito' after chapter 108, and episode 49, 'Bright Red Sword', after chapter 113. A viewer of season 3 starts at Vol. 15. The fight does not end in this book or the next, so treat Vols. 13 to 15 as one purchase.
Spoilers — why this volume matters. Tap to reveal.
Hantengu, Upper Four, splits when beheaded: Muichiro cuts him once and gets two, Genya cuts those and gets four, and Tanjiro works out that each body is an emotion. Gyokko, Upper Five, goes after the smiths. Muichiro, who had first chosen to leave a boy to his fate, turns back for him, and chapter 108 is 'Thank You, Tokito'; he ends the book poisoned and sealed in a pot of water. Genya is the debut that matters. He fights with a shotgun and a short sword, shrugs off wounds that should kill him, and by chapter 113 has taken on a demon's appearance. The explanation, that he eats them, comes later, and so does the reason he wants his brother's acknowledgment, which the series collects on in the final battle. 'Bright Red Blade', chapter 113, is Nezuko closing her hands on Tanjiro's sword so that her burning blood heats it red, and one of Hantengu's bodies recognizing in it the blade of the swordsman who once nearly killed Muzan. It is the second time, after Daki's borrowed memory in Vol. 10, that Muzan's cells remember someone Tanjiro resembles. The series is assembling Yoriichi out of other people's fear of him.
