Dorohedoro begins with an injured body and a missing identity, so this is the place to test its central mystery. Caiman has a reptile head and amnesia; Nikaido helps him hunt the sorcerer responsible. VIZ lists this opening paperback at 176 pages. Buy it for that investigation before committing to the full run: the premise asks for tolerance of bodily violence as well as curiosity about the answer.

Spoilers — why this volume matters. Tap to reveal.

The first book's premise makes Caiman both a victim of magical violence and someone willing to inflict violence without knowing the culprit. That is a better buying test than the reptile head alone. VIZ's synopsis says his killings provoke En to send cleaners into the Hole. Read as an invitation to the series, this makes the investigation politically expensive: each attempt to recover a private past produces another enemy in the present. The appeal rests on following that collision, rather than treating the transformation as a puzzle that can be separated from its victims.
