Golden Kamuy starts with a veteran who needs more than combat experience to survive Hokkaido. VIZ introduces Sugimoto through his search for hidden Ainu gold and his dependence on Asirpa in the northern wilderness. Start here if the attraction is that uneasy division of expertise: a soldier can survive a war without knowing how to live in the place he has entered. This is the opening standard paperback, not a later adventure selected for its treasure hunt.

The premise makes Sugimoto's reputation a poor substitute for local knowledge. VIZ describes a war veteran facing criminals, soldiers and Hokkaido's conditions with help from an Ainu girl. Read that arrangement as a limit on the familiar self-sufficient action hero: being difficult to kill is not the same as being equipped to live. That is the useful reason to sample the beginning before committing to the run. The gold supplies a destination; the unequal kinds of knowledge supply a relationship. Asirpa's presence changes what competence can mean in this particular adventure.
