Golden Kamuy makes its durable soldier the person who needs rescuing. VIZ opens this installment with Sugimoto captured and Asirpa and Shiraishi responsible for getting him out. For a reader continuing from the earlier books, that is the distinguishing purchase: the partnership has to function while Sugimoto is unable to act for himself. This is a continuation purchase, not the reason to buy the run by itself. Read the capture in sequence rather than treating the rescue as an independent adventure.

A rescue premise can expose a partnership more clearly than another successful escape. Here VIZ puts Sugimoto's survival in Asirpa and Shiraishi's hands while hostile parties continue pursuing the gold. The useful interpretive pressure is on his nickname: endurance still leaves him dependent on other people making competent decisions. A buyer interested only in Sugimoto as an indestructible fighter would miss the more specific attraction of this setup. Asirpa and Shiraishi must cooperate while Sugimoto depends on the result. The situation makes dependence practical, rather than a speech about friendship.
