Hunter x Hunter Volume 16 opens with card trading becoming necessary to the Greed Island strategy. Chapters 152–163 continue the game, and the licensed opening begins with inventory management and negotiation before the sporting contest advertised elsewhere. The analysis below reads that opening passage only, not the later match or the game's result. Omnibus 6 includes this standard book; its larger collected number should not be mistaken for the starting point of the preceding omnibus.

Trading first appears to offer an alternative to fighting. Gon, Killua and Biscuit discuss seeking other players because gathering every difficult item alone would take too long. The opposing group also negotiates, but treats any attractive deal as useful only if it advances its own monopoly. The distinction sharpens when a captive is forced to roll a dangerous die: good luck becomes a resource extracted from someone who pleads to stop. The mechanism is called a gamble, yet the person choosing the risk and the person bearing it are different. The opening makes cooperation and coercion use the same game system, so a shared objective says little about the conditions under which players pursue it.
