Film: Jujutsu Kaisen 0

The numbering is the problem. This book was published as Tokyo Metropolitan Curse Technical School, a four-chapter series Gege Akutami finished before Jujutsu Kaisen began; it was renamed Jujutsu Kaisen 0 afterward, and Wikipedia describes the main series as its sequel rather than the other way round. So the zero is a marketing decision about shelf order, not a reading instruction. The site's watch order puts the 2021 film of this book after season 1, because the film's final scene lands as a reveal only for a viewer who has already met the person it concerns. Viz prints it at 200 pages and $11.99, and the Complete Box Set includes it.

What is inside is the Tokyo school a year before Yuji arrives, and the student the main series keeps in reserve. Akutami wrote it as a standalone and then wrote a longer series in its world, which is why its cast overlaps but its shape does not: four chapters, one arc, an ending. Skipping it entirely leaves two of the last ten volumes short of their setup, since the character it belongs to carries the Shinjuku fight from Vol. 28 on. The position this site takes is Vol. 1 first, this book somewhere after Vol. 16, and the film after season 1. The Complete Box Set settles the question by including it, and its inclusion is the only reason the set holds 31 books rather than 30.
