Knights of Sidonia Volume 1 begins with an outsider entering the society his spaceship shelters. Nagate has grown up below the inhabited levels, while the people above have changed their biology to survive. Start here if the attraction is the collision between a survival machine and a functioning community. The opening asks readers to learn the ship alongside someone who already lives inside it but does not know its society.

The useful distinction is between shelter and membership. The Sidonia has preserved human life after the destruction of its home, yet Nagate has remained beneath the society that survival made possible. Photosynthesis and new genders make that distance concrete: his ignorance concerns bodies as well as customs. The captain then gives him a legacy, connecting someone outside ordinary shipboard life to its authority. For a prospective reader, that is a more specific reason to try the opening than the presence of giant enemies. Humanity has continued, but belonging to humanity is still something Nagate must negotiate.
