Knights of Sidonia Volume 3 complicates the assumption that its enemy can only be fought. Contact and the ship’s concealed history become reasons to continue, beyond watching pilots face another target. This is best approached after the opening conflict has established what the humans think they know. A reader primarily interested in the limits of that knowledge has a clearer reason to buy this installment than someone looking for a fresh starting point.
Spoilers — why this volume matters. Tap to reveal.
The enemy attempts contact in a disturbingly familiar form, while the dormitory’s talking bear discloses secrets about the Sidonia. Putting those developments together changes the question from how to defeat an alien to how much the ship’s residents understand either side. Familiarity is no longer a guarantee of safety, and an apparently domestic figure can possess consequential history. That is the argument for continuing through this stage: the established categories become less reliable. It is not evidence that the conflict has become peaceful, only that treating every encounter as an exchange of fire leaves something important out.
