A young guest in Komi's home makes friendship an obligation she cannot leave at school. Rei is standoffish, and VIZ describes Komi recognizing something familiar in the child's loneliness. Read this as a change in the direction of care: Komi tries to apply what she has learned to somebody younger. The household setting gives the effort a different intimacy from another classroom introduction, without guaranteeing that shared difficulty makes contact easy.

Recognizing loneliness does not tell Komi how to reach Rei. VIZ makes both parts explicit: she sees a resemblance to her former isolation and keeps trying even when the child resists. That tension gives the guest's arrival a useful role in the run. Komi has experience that might help, but experience is not authority over another person's needs. The stronger reading is that the transition from being helped to helping should remain awkward. Otherwise her earlier difficulties become a convenient qualification, and Rei becomes an exercise designed only to demonstrate how much the older character has improved.
