Komi's wish for more friends meets an awkward complication when Tadano spends time with Onemine. VIZ frames the problem as jealousy, giving the friendship project a less generous impulse to contend with. This is useful early context for readers following the romance: wanting company and wanting a particular person's attention are different demands. The premise turns inward before it can become another straightforward opportunity to add a friend.

Jealousy makes the friend-counting premise argue with itself. Onemine could be another connection, but Komi's concern over Tadano makes her look like competition instead. VIZ describes Komi watching them without being able to explain what troubles her. The change of register lies there: silence can conceal possessiveness as well as loneliness. That is a stronger complication than simply making the next introduction harder. The series needs room for Komi to be unfair, or her difficulty communicating becomes an automatic certificate of innocence. The prospect of a new friend can expose an existing friendship to an uncomfortable test.
