Land of the Lustrous begins with a fragile gem whose assigned work falls outside the battlefield. Phosphophyllite wants to fight, but a natural-history assignment offers a different place in a society threatened by the Lunarians. This is the starting book for readers interested in how usefulness gets defined before anyone proves their strength. The premise gives you a practical test for the series: whether the work denied prestige interests you as much as combat.

The natural-history assignment brings Phos into contact with the isolated Cinnabar. That connection makes the apparently lesser job worth taking seriously: a role can matter because of whom it makes visible, even when the person doing it would prefer another assignment. The Lunarians threaten to turn the gems into decorations, giving usefulness an ugly opposite. A living being can become valuable to somebody precisely by losing the freedom to act. As an opening purchase, this book offers a sharper proposition than an unusual kind of fantasy fighter: it puts the desire to contribute beside the danger of being valued only for what somebody else can use.
