Land of the Lustrous tests whether Phos's new legs can deliver the fighting ability Phos wanted. The physical change supplies the opening situation, but owning a stronger body is a poor guarantee of knowing how to use it under threat. Continue here for the consequences of that mismatch. This belongs after the sea journey, with the earlier desire to join the fighting still necessary to understanding what Phos expects the change to solve.

Phos freezes when the new strength is needed and responds by staying awake through winter while the other gems sleep. That voluntary punishment changes the argument about becoming useful. The obstacle is no longer simply a brittle body: Phos now treats fear as something that must be paid for through additional exposure to danger. Winter therefore matters as a chosen ordeal, not evidence of an easy recovery interval. The book earns its change-of-register angle through that move from physical improvement to self-punishment. A new capacity has arrived without the confidence to use it, and Phos's answer makes the failure more expensive.
