Land of the Lustrous resumes with Phos immobilized in battle and Ghost Quartz as the available backup. Buy this as a continuation of the conflict, with an endangered partnership already carrying the opening rather than a fresh assignment to establish. The useful distinction is between acquiring a partner and being able to protect that partner. Here the immediate problem is survival while waiting for help, which makes this a poor book to sample in isolation.

The Lunarian attack puts a newly formed pair under pressure before they have much room to become a functioning unit. Phos cannot move, so the promise of partnership has a very unequal practical burden: Ghost Quartz is the only support present. Read the sustained attack as a test of dependency rather than another opportunity to measure Phos's strength. Waiting for reinforcements also limits what either gem can control. The book's buying case rests on following an unresolved battle and its vulnerable participants; a reader looking for a self-contained introduction to a new corner of the setting should begin elsewhere.
