Mashle opens with a boy who must enter magic school despite having no magic, making this the starting volume for new readers. Mash wants a quiet life with his father; becoming a Divine Visionary is the price attached to being accepted. That gives the school competition a sharper purpose than collecting a prestigious title. His extraordinary physical strength supplies the comic mismatch, but the demand to conceal his lack of magic supplies the pressure.
Spoilers — why this volume matters. Tap to reveal.
The opening premise makes ambition look suspiciously compulsory. Mash already knows what he wants: to live peacefully with his father. The route offered to him instead requires exceptional achievement inside an institution organized around the ability he lacks. Becoming the best student is therefore a defensive project, even if the contest resembles a conventional climb toward glory. That distinction is the reason to begin here rather than sample a later fight. The muscle-versus-magic joke is immediately legible; the unfair bargain beneath it gives the joke somewhere to go. Acceptance has an entrance exam.
