- Season 1: 風影奪還の章 (Kazekage Rescue) ep. 1–32
This book does not stand alone, and that is the first thing to know before buying it. Chapters 263 to 271 open a fight that does not finish inside them: Sakura and Chiyo against Sasori and his puppets, begun here and settled in the next volume. Team Guy spends the same chapters split into single combats against a barrier and the traps left behind it, while Naruto and Kakashi are drawn away by Deidara. Nothing resolves, and the last chapter is titled 'Unknown Power...!!', which is a cliffhanger printed in a contents list. Bought by itself it is nine chapters of rising action with no landing. Bought with Vols. 29 and 31 it is the middle of a rescue shaped as one continuous thing. Shippuden covers it inside season 1, episodes 1 to 32. Viz prices it at $11.99 for 192 pages.
Spoilers — why this volume matters. Tap to reveal.
Sakura gets an extended fight here and the volume is built to give her one: the medical training she took from Tsunade during the time skip, paired with Chiyo's puppetry, against a man who has made himself a puppet. Everything else is cleared out of the way for it. Naruto and Kakashi are pulled off after Deidara, who leaves carrying Gaara's body, and Team Guy is broken into separate fights against a barrier and its traps so that the two real confrontations can run uninterrupted. None of it lands inside these chapters. The Sasori fight runs past the end of the volume and is settled in Vol. 31, which is the honest reason not to buy this book alone. As the middle of a three-volume sequence it does its job. As a book it stops in the air, and a reader who owns only this one has paid for setup. The anime covers the same stretch that covers the volumes on either side of it, inside Shippuden's first season.
