- Season 4: 不死の破壊者、飛段・角都の章 (Hidan and Kakuzu) ep. 72–88
Chapters 330 to 339, and the stretch where Naruto's series stops being about Naruto for a book. Shikamaru takes what is left of Team Asuma out after Hidan and Kakuzu, with Kakashi attached as leader and Yamato left behind to run Naruto's training. Two of these ten chapter titles name Shikamaru and none names Naruto. Shippuden season 4 covers chapters 312 to 340, so a viewer who finished it has seen this entire book and one chapter more. For a buyer the useful number is not the $11.99 on this volume: the 3-in-1 line collects three standard volumes for $16.99, and Viz does not print the contents of any book in that line after the sixth, so check the listing before ordering.
Spoilers — why this volume matters. Tap to reveal.
It reads as a detour, and the detour is the better half: Shikamaru beats an immortal with preparation while Naruto is offscreen learning a technique. Hidan is not killed. He is filed: Shikamaru separates him from Kakuzu, detonates him, and buries the still-speaking remains in his clan's forest where nobody will find them. That is the whole of the revenge for the teacher killed in the previous volume, and it is settled by a plan rather than by power, which is not how this series usually settles anything. Kakuzu is the harder half. His spare hearts absorb everything Kakashi and the others land, and the book ends with him still standing and Naruto arriving with Yamato, Sakura and Sai, which is the setup the next volume cashes.
