Ouran High School Host Club Volume 18 is the final book, for readers completing Haruhi and Tamaki's story. Tamaki is trying to arrange a first date and finds the planning difficult. That is a suitably specific problem to carry into the ending: romance still requires doing something with another person, even after the desire for it becomes clear. Buy this after the preceding volumes, as the close of the run rather than an introduction to the club.

Tamaki wants the ideal first date so badly that the planning overwhelms him, and the other hosts offer assistance. The premise gives the finale a useful comic limit: being able to imagine an extravagant occasion does not mean being able to organize a comfortable meeting. His friends remain involved even when the immediate goal is time with Haruhi. Read the date planning as a test of proportion, where the occasion can become larger than the person it is for. The last book returns attention to a task Tamaki still needs help doing.
