Ouran High School Host Club Volume 8 offers a school courage test for readers who want the ensemble's comic side. Haruhi's classmates take part in a contest built around fear and embarrassment. The event is a smaller reason to continue than a promise of romantic resolution, and this book is not the reason to buy the run by itself. Its particular attraction is the mismatch between a team that should reassure its nervous member and teammates who may make matters worse.

Class president Kazukiho Souga welcomes having levelheaded Haruhi on his team, but Hikaru and Kaoru are there too. The arrangement gives fear a social cause as well as whatever the courage test supplies: the people beside him are part of what he has to endure. That is a useful distinction for an ensemble comedy. Haruhi can be reassuring without controlling the entire group. For readers primarily following the romance, the contest is a comic detour rather than a reason to jump ahead. Its interest is the uneven distribution of confidence inside one team.
