Parasyte opens with a student fighting an alien for control of his body. The invaders can hide behind human faces, so recognizing a threat is already part of the problem. Start here for the premise before choosing later confrontations. This is the original standard edition; the separately named Paperback Collection has an updated translation. Choose the edition deliberately at the beginning instead of treating every paperback listing as the same text.

The opening gives bodily survival an awkward condition: the thing Shinichi needs to resist is already inside him. That makes ordinary invasion logic inadequate. Keeping the enemy outside is no longer an available defense, and a human face offers no reliable assurance about anyone else. The useful reason to begin here is that combination of compromised privacy and public uncertainty. Later conflicts need the distinction between looking human and retaining control of a human life. The premise earns its horror before any claim about the invaders having superior weapons: Shinichi cannot simply leave the danger behind.
