Parasyte turns Shinichi into a target of both the government and the alien invaders. A pursuit from both directions makes his mixed condition a problem that neither side can comfortably accept. Read this near the end of the standard run, with the final volume still to come. The draw is the collapse of an easy refuge: being opposed to the aliens does not automatically put Shinichi beyond human suspicion.

The government’s pursuit is the consequential addition to the conflict here. Shinichi already faces danger from the invaders; being hunted by human authorities means that membership in the threatened species is no simple protection. This is a change from hiding an alien inside a human life to having that life treated as a target by competing powers. It also makes a familiar shortcut untenable: identifying a common enemy does not prove that two parties will trust each other. The book’s argument can be followed through that specific trap without assuming the government and the parasites have identical motives.
