Pluto begins with a murder investigation led by a robot who has reasons to fear its answer. VIZ's opening premise pairs the destruction of Mont Blanc with the killing of a robot-rights advocate. Gesicht receives the case. Buy this first if the attraction is a detective story about robots as people: the investigation supplies a route into that question without requiring a purchase of the whole run in advance.

The opening case makes the detective's position unusually vulnerable. VIZ identifies Gesicht as both the investigator and a member of the group being targeted. That overlap is the useful reason to sample this book: gathering evidence and protecting himself cannot stay separate jobs. The staged horns on the victims connect deaths that otherwise look unrelated, giving the investigation a concrete pattern before any explanation of motive. A robot detective could have been a convenient device for dispassionate reasoning. Putting him among the potential victims makes that distance unavailable. The case threatens the person expected to make sense of it.
