Sakamoto Days begins with a retired assassin whose old profession refuses to leave his family alone. Taro Sakamoto now runs a neighborhood store with his wife and child. A visitor brings an ultimatum: return to the work he abandoned or face death. Start here for the original conflict between an ordinary household and the people who consider its owner their property. The marriage precedes the threat.

The opening gives Sakamoto something more specific than a reputation to defend. His store and family already exist when the visitor arrives, so retirement is a life someone is trying to interrupt, rather than a reward promised after one final job. That distinction makes the ultimatum ugly: the old profession claims the right to cancel his present obligations. Read the demand to return as a claim of ownership. Being good at killing has become somebody else’s argument that he must keep doing it. The demand makes retirement itself an act the old profession expects him to justify.
