Sakamoto Days turns back to Sakamoto’s youth and a mission assigned to prevent expulsion from the JCC. Nagumo, Akao, and Uzuki share the assignment, which takes them to a department store serving assassins. This is the past of the professional world the present-day story inhabits. Choose it for that earlier perspective, while keeping the established relationships in mind: being young does not make these characters independent of their later lives.

The threat of expulsion makes this mission an institutional bargain before it becomes a test of individual ability. Sakamoto and the others are being offered a way to remain inside the system, on the system’s terms. Setting their assignment in a department store for assassins reinforces how organized that world already is. Killing has its school and its shopping infrastructure. The flashback therefore gives the present-day conflict a different frame: these people were formed within a profession with ordinary mechanisms for rewarding compliance. Their later choices emerge from that training environment, rather than from a vacuum.
