An outbreak in Lilias makes Shirayuki and Ryu’s arrival the beginning of a medical emergency. Readers following the herbalist work get a book organized around the need for a cure before the illness spreads. This starts a crisis rather than offering a relaxed introduction to the city. Keep the next volume in view if you want the return from that emergency as well as its immediate demands on the people trying to contain it.

The outbreak gives urgency to a skill that a court romance could otherwise treat as decorative. Shirayuki and Ryu need to find a cure because other people are becoming ill, not because medical success would make a useful impression. Zen and his companions are traveling toward Wirant when they hear the news, connecting the emergency to a separate journey. That arrangement makes the city’s needs the point of convergence. The following volume opens after the disease has been stopped; this book belongs to the problem-solving stretch leading into that aftermath, not a fresh courtship episode.
