Spy x Family starts with a spy whose assignment requires a family. VIZ presents Twilight's school infiltration as a problem he cannot solve alone: he needs a wife and child. Start here if the appeal is the household arrangement itself, since that arrangement supplies the reason the espionage and domestic comedy belong together. This is the opening manga volume, and the sensible single-book trial before committing to a longer shelf.

The useful absurdity is that Twilight must depend on people he does not understand. VIZ identifies his chosen wife as an assassin and his adopted child as a telepath, while stating that he does not know either fact. That gives the family premise an imbalance beyond ordinary undercover work: the person assembling the cover lacks crucial information about its participants. The opening book is therefore the best purchase for testing interest in secrecy inside a household. Buying a later action installment first would test a different attraction while bypassing the arrangement that makes the family necessary.
