The new era celebrates peace and regards Fushi's struggle against the Nokkers as something from the distant past. That creates a different kind of dislocation from arriving in another town. The world has had time to reinterpret the life he remembers, while its streets display ordinary technologies outside his previous experience. Read the setting change as a test of belonging: being connected to a society's history does not automatically make someone equipped to inhabit its present. The movement from siege to modern peace changes what Fushi must learn to recognize.
