The apparent peace of Fushi's modern world gives way to danger inside familiar relationships. Readers continuing the modern setting should approach this book as a change in how the enemy can be recognized. The threat no longer fits comfortably outside ordinary social life. That makes the domestic setting important to the conflict itself: the people around Fushi cannot be understood only as the community a distant battle is supposed to protect.

Nokkers appear as neighbors, mothers, and siblings, bringing the enemy into roles that ordinarily invite trust. The Beholder then approaches Fushi as a young boy with news of the Nokkers' victory. The important change is from an enemy that can be located across a battlefield to one whose presence complicates familiar human identities. Recognition becomes a problem before resistance can begin. This is a reason to follow the modern stretch beyond its initial promise of peace: the ordinary world supplies the enemy with relationships through which to act.
