Vinland Saga's English Book 3 opens during a winter pause in the English campaign. The regular English book is separate from Japanese volume numbering and the Deluxe edition. Its licensed digital opening moves between King Sweyn receiving news, Thorkell's soldiers eating in Gloucester, and Askeladd's concealed camp. This analysis ends with a prayer at a grave. The pursuit's result, Canute's later decisions and the rest of the book remain outside the inspected pages.

Sweyn hears that Canute is missing and turns the report toward his son's supposed lack of fitness to rule. Thorkell receives winter less calmly: he wanted more fighting, and news of an impending coronation threatens to end the war that gives him purpose. Neither response begins with the people supplying the armies' food. Their cost emerges through the innkeeper pleading with Thorkell's men to stop consuming the village's stores, while Thorkell tells his own companion to stop complaining. In another camp, a soldier suggests killing grieving Christians to keep them quiet. The inspected opening then lets their prayer ask salvation for the men who killed the dead and forgiveness for the speakers’ own sins. The pause in fighting exposes what different people want from its continuation, and who has already paid for it.
