Yona of the Dawn begins with a princess whose safety depends on the people closest to her. Mizuho Kusanagi builds the starting point around Yona, her guard Hak, and the palace life that has sheltered her. Begin here for the relationships behind the flight from court; a later rescue or confrontation cannot supply the same introduction to what Yona has lost. This is the standard paperback opening.

The opening gives Yona a practical problem before it can give her a political program. After witnessing a murder, she escapes the palace with Hak and has to avoid the forces pursuing her. Her title cannot provide food, shelter, or a safe route. That is the useful distinction in the premise: losing royal protection is also losing the conditions under which her old choices made sense. Hak can help her survive, but survival does not answer where she should go. The series starts with that absence of a destination.
